Eastern bluestar is a perennial that forms large, multi-stemmed clumps. The smooth stems are crowded with narrow, oval leaves that turn golden-yellow in the fall. There are loose clusters of blue, tubular flowers at the tips of the stems that are often partially hidden by uppermost leaves. The petals of the flower flare to a star-shape. The species name commemorates the 16th-century German herbalist Jakobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus.
